Copper Ionization for Swimming Pools: Ancient Science Meets Modern Pool Technology

The internet is suddenly talking about copper ionization. At Intec America, we've been doing it for more than 50 years.

If you've spent any time on Facebook, X, YouTube, or other social media platforms recently, you may have encountered videos discussing the antimicrobial properties of copper and asking a surprisingly simple question:

If copper has been used to help control microorganisms for thousands of years, why aren't we using it in swimming pools?

The answer may surprise many pool owners:

We are.

Copper ionization is not a new social-media discovery. It is a scientifically established water-treatment technology that has been used in swimming pools for decades. Modern ionization systems use a controlled electrical process to release copper ions into circulating pool water, where they help control algae and microorganisms.

The science behind this process goes back much further than the modern swimming pool.

Copper's Antimicrobial History Goes Back Thousands of Years

Long before scientists understood bacteria, viruses, or even the germ theory of disease, civilizations recognized that copper had unusual properties.

Historical accounts describe copper vessels and copper compounds being used for water storage, wound care, and other sanitary purposes. What ancient civilizations learned through observation was eventually investigated scientifically.

In the late 19th century, Swiss scientist Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli studied the ability of extremely small concentrations of certain metals to affect microorganisms. His research helped establish what became known as the oligodynamic effect—the biological effect produced by very small concentrations of certain metal ions, including copper.

Today, copper's antimicrobial properties are well established. Modern research has demonstrated that copper ions can interfere with microbial cell membranes, proteins, enzymes, and other essential cellular processes. Research has also documented the antimicrobial activity of copper against numerous microorganisms.

So when a social-media video says that copper has antimicrobial properties, that basic claim is not pseudoscience.

It is established science.

What Does Electricity Have to Do With It?

This is where some viral videos can become misleading.

You may hear claims that a copper ionization system "electrically charges the pool water."

That's not the best description of what is happening.

A properly designed copper ionization system applies a controlled, low-voltage direct electrical current to copper electrodes installed in the pool's circulation system.

This electrical current causes microscopic amounts of copper to enter the water as positively charged copper ions.

Rather than simply placing a piece of copper pipe in the pool and hoping enough copper dissolves, an ionization system allows the release of copper to be controlled and monitored.

Once introduced into the circulating water, those copper ions remain available throughout the pool.

That's one of the characteristics that makes ionization particularly interesting for swimming-pool applications.

Copper and Chlorine Don't Do Exactly the Same Job

This is one of the most important facts often missed in discussions about copper pools.

Copper and chlorine should not necessarily be viewed as competing versions of the same chemical.

They perform different functions.

Copper ions are particularly effective at helping control algae and have antimicrobial properties against various microorganisms.

Chlorine, on the other hand, is a powerful and fast-acting disinfectant and oxidizer. Oxidation is important because swimmers continually introduce organic material into pool water—including perspiration, body oils, cosmetics, sunscreen, and other contaminants.

Copper does not provide the same oxidation function.

That leads to a much more useful question than simply asking:

"Should I use copper or chlorine?"

A better question is:

Can copper ionization substantially reduce a swimming pool's dependence on chlorine?

Research suggests this deserves serious consideration.

What Does Modern Research Say?

A particularly interesting study was published in 2021 in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Researchers investigated swimming pools using copper-silver ionization combined with lower chlorine concentrations. Their objective was to determine whether this approach could reduce the formation and toxicity of disinfection byproducts.

Why is that important?

When chlorine reacts with organic matter in swimming-pool water, it can produce numerous disinfection byproducts (DBPs).

The researchers measured 71 DBPs and evaluated other indicators, including cellular toxicity.

The results were significant.

In the indoor pool studied, using copper-silver ionization with a lower chlorine residual was associated with:

  • Up to an 80% reduction in emerging disinfection byproduct concentrations

  • Up to a 70% reduction in measured cytotoxicity

The researchers concluded that copper-silver ionization combined with lower chlorine could potentially provide a safer swimming environment by reducing DBP formation and toxicity.

This doesn't mean chlorine has no role in swimming-pool sanitation.

It does demonstrate something important:

There is legitimate scientific evidence supporting the concept of using ionization to reduce reliance on chlorine.

Why Reduce Chlorine in the First Place?

Chlorine revolutionized water sanitation and remains one of the world's most important disinfectants.

But more chlorine isn't necessarily better.

When chlorine reacts with organic material introduced into a swimming pool, disinfection byproducts can form. The 2021 Environmental Science & Technology study specifically notes the association between swimming-pool DBPs and respiratory-related concerns in frequent swimmers.

Many pool owners also look for alternatives because of the familiar characteristics associated with heavily chlorinated pools:

  • Strong chlorine odors

  • Eye irritation

  • Dry-feeling skin

  • Swimsuit and material degradation

  • Frequent chemical adjustments

  • Ongoing chemical expense

Reducing dependence on chlorine while maintaining clear, properly treated water is therefore an attractive goal.

Copper ionization offers one potential way to accomplish that.

What About "Chlorine-Free" Pools?

This is where responsible discussion becomes particularly important.

Copper ionization should not be confused with simply putting copper metal into a swimming pool and abandoning water chemistry.

Swimming pools still require proper filtration, circulation, pH management, testing, and oxidation of contaminants.

Furthermore, recommendations for public and commercial swimming pools are different from individual experiences with privately owned residential pools.

The CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code is designed for aquatic venues open to the public and establishes guidance intended to reduce illness and injury at these facilities.

Consequently, statements about what can successfully be achieved in a properly maintained residential pool should not automatically be interpreted as recommendations for public aquatic facilities or as replacements for applicable state and local health codes.

Does Copper Turn Hair Green or Stain Pools?

Copper concentrations and water chemistry need to be properly controlled.

Excessive copper, high pH, combined with unfavorable water chemistry can contribute to staining of pool surfaces and discoloration of light-colored hair.  Furthermore, shock treatments change the state of dissolved copper which is the main contributor to these conditions.  One should never shock an ionized pool.

But there is an important distinction between controlled copper ionization and indiscriminately adding copper-containing chemicals to a swimming pool.

A properly designed ionization system allows copper concentrations to be monitored and adjusted.

Pool owners should maintain proper water balance and regularly test copper levels rather than assuming that "more copper is better."

It isn't.

The objective is to maintain an appropriate residual—not to continuously increase the amount of copper in the pool.

This Isn't the Same as Throwing Copper Pipe in Your Skimmer

Social media has also produced DIY experiments involving copper tubing, copper wire, or pieces of copper placed directly into swimming pools.

While the underlying observation that copper can release cuprous ions into water has a scientific basis, this is very different from cupric ion production controlled through ionization.

A commercial ionization system provides something a piece of copper pipe cannot:

Control.

The system uses electrical current to regulate ion production, while water testing provides a means of measuring the resulting copper concentration.

Pool sanitation shouldn't be based on guessing how much copper may or may not be dissolving from a piece of metal.

The Technology Isn't New—Awareness of It Is

Perhaps the most interesting part of today's viral interest in copper is that many people are discovering a technology that has existed for generations.

Copper's antimicrobial properties have been known for centuries.

The oligodynamic effect was scientifically investigated more than a century ago.

Modern research continues to document copper's antimicrobial mechanisms.

And controlled copper ionization has been used in water-treatment applications for decades.

What's changing isn't necessarily the science.

Consumer awareness is changing.

Pool owners are increasingly asking questions about the chemicals they use, the cost of maintaining their pools, swimmer comfort, and whether there are ways to reduce dependence on traditional chemical treatment.

Those are reasonable questions.

And copper ionization deserves to be part of that conversation.
