How to Close Your Ionized Pool for Winter

As swimming season comes to an end and cooler temperatures arrive, properly closing your pool can protect the pool surface, plumbing, filtration equipment, and water quality throughout the winter.
If you own an Intec copper ionization system, however, winterizing your pool is a little different from closing a conventional chlorine or saltwater pool. One of the biggest advantages is that copper ions do not evaporate or rapidly dissipate from the water. Once you have established the proper copper residual, those ions can remain in the pool even after circulation has stopped.
That makes copper ionization particularly well suited for seasonal pool closing. Instead of loading the pool with chlorine and traditional winterizing chemicals, the goal is to put the pool to bed clean, properly balanced, and with an adequate copper residual already established.
Here is how we recommend approaching the process.
When Should You Close Your Pool?
Don't rush to close the pool just because summer is over. Intec's general pool-closing guidance recommends waiting until the water temperature is consistently below approximately 65°F (18°C). Cooler water naturally slows biological activity, reducing the opportunity for algae and other microorganisms to grow after the pool has been covered. (Intec America Corporation)
This is particularly helpful with an ionized pool because you want the copper residual to maintain the water during a period when biological demand is already relatively low.
Step 1: Thoroughly Clean the Pool
Before doing anything with the water chemistry, clean the pool.
Remove leaves, sticks, insects, acorns, and other debris from the water and pool floor. Brush the walls, vacuum the bottom, and clean the skimmer baskets and pump basket.
Don't leave organic debris sitting on the bottom of the pool all winter. As leaves and other organic material decompose, they can contribute to discoloration, staining, and poor water quality.
This is consistent with Intec's normal maintenance recommendations: keeping the pool, skimmers, filter, and pump basket clean helps keep the water—and the copper already in it—in good condition.
Step 2: Balance the pH Before Testing Copper
This is probably the most important step for an ionized pool.
Before checking your copper concentration, adjust the pool's pH to 7.0–7.4.
Intec's instruction manual emphasizes that pH should be tested and corrected before copper because high pH can cause minerals to precipitate and can also interfere with the copper test itself.
The recommended operating range for an Intec ionized pool is:
pH: 7.0–7.4
Total Alkalinity: 50–80 ppm
Copper: 0.4–0.6 ppm, with 0.5 ppm ideal
Calcium hardness should also be checked before closing. The Intec manual recommends approximately 150–200 ppm minimum for vinyl, fiberglass, or painted pools and approximately 300 ppm for plaster pools, while also advising owners to follow the pool-surface manufacturer's requirements. Importantly, the manual specifically recommends testing and treating calcium hardness in both the spring and fall.
Step 3: Bring Copper to Approximately 0.5 ppm
Once the pH is correct, test your copper level.
Intec recommends an ideal copper concentration of approximately 0.5 ppm, with 0.4–0.6 ppm considered an acceptable range.
If your copper concentration is low, operate the ionizer before closing the pool until the proper residual is achieved.
Remember one critical rule:
Never operate the ionizer without water flowing through the copper electrode.
The Intec manual specifically instructs that the pool pump must be operating and water must be flowing across the copper bars whenever the ionizer is producing copper.
This is especially important for the CA10 and CV50. Once the circulation system is shut down for winter, the ionizer should be turned off.
Step 4: Don't “Shock” the Pool Just Because You're Closing It
This is one of the biggest differences between closing an ionized pool and following a conventional pool-closing checklist.
Traditional pool advice frequently tells owners to add a large dose of chlorine shock immediately before covering the pool. That is not Intec's recommended procedure for an ionized pool.

Your copper ions are already providing the residual protection you want going into winter.
If oxidation is needed to remove accumulated organic material, follow Intec's normal oxidation recommendations rather than automatically applying a high-dose chlorine shock treatment. The current Intec manual identifies hydrogen peroxide or household bleach as oxidation options for normal ionized-pool maintenance.
The objective before closing is simple:
Clean water + balanced pH + proper copper residual + minimal organic material.
Not a chemical overload.
Step 5: Avoid “Metal Out” Products
This is another important difference between an ionized pool and a conventionally maintained pool.
Many generic winterizing kits contain products designed to sequester metals. That can be counterproductive in a copper-ionized pool because copper is the active component of the sanitation system.
Intec specifically warns against Metal Out and similar products because they can bind copper ions, making them ineffective. The manual also notes that these products can attack the copper electrode.
Before using a packaged pool-closing or winterizing kit, therefore, read the ingredients carefully.
A product intended to remove copper from the water is doing exactly the opposite of what you want from an ionized pool.
Step 6: Inspect Your Copper Electrode
Fall is also an excellent time to inspect the copper bars.
If the bars are significantly depleted, replacing them now can make spring startup easier. Intec recommends periodically checking the electrodes because the copper bars gradually wear as copper is released into the water. (Intec America Corporation)
The Intec manual provides instructions for removing the electrode housing and replacing the copper bars when necessary. The electrode assembly can be disconnected at the unions, and care should be taken not to lose or damage the O-rings.
If your pool is located in an area subject to freezing, the ionization cell should be treated just like the rest of the pool's water-containing equipment: do not leave water trapped where it can freeze and expand.
Step 7: Winterize the Pump, Filter, Heater and Plumbing
Once your water chemistry and copper residual are where you want them, proceed with the normal mechanical winterization of the pool.
Depending upon your pool design and climate, this can include lowering the water level, draining the pump and filter, draining the heater, blowing water from plumbing lines, installing winter plugs, removing ladders or accessories, and preparing the skimmer for freezing conditions.

Never completely drain the swimming pool unless specifically instructed to do so by the pool manufacturer or a qualified pool professional.
The exact winterization procedure varies considerably between above-ground, vinyl-liner, fiberglass, and concrete pools, as well as by climate.
Step 8: Install and Secure the Winter Cover
Once the equipment has been winterized, install the pool cover.
A properly fitted cover reduces the amount of leaves, dirt, rainwater, and other contamination entering the pool over the winter.
This is particularly beneficial with an ionized pool. You are essentially creating a relatively closed environment containing clean, balanced water with an established copper residual.
Check the cover periodically during the winter, particularly after severe storms, heavy rain, ice, or snow.
Why Copper Ionization Is Well Suited for Winter Closing
Here's where an Intec ionized pool has an interesting advantage.
Copper ions don't behave like chlorine.
Chlorine is consumed by sunlight, organic contaminants, and chemical reactions and therefore requires replenishment. Copper ions, by contrast, do not simply evaporate or rapidly dissipate from the pool. Intec's manual explains that when the pool and filtration system are properly maintained, the copper ions remain in the water.
That means you can establish the desired copper concentration before shutting the circulation system down and allow that residual to remain in the pool during the off-season.

That can mean fewer chemicals at closing—and potentially much less work when you remove the cover in spring.
A Simple Ionized Pool Closing Checklist
Before putting your Intec pool to bed for the winter:

Wait for cooler water — preferably consistently below about 65°F.

Remove all leaves and debris and thoroughly brush and vacuum the pool.

Clean the skimmers, pump basket and filter.

Adjust pH to 7.0–7.4.

Check total alkalinity and maintain approximately 50–80 ppm.

Check calcium hardness according to the pool surface requirements.

Test copper and adjust to approximately 0.5 ppm.

Do not automatically shock the pool with high levels of chlorine.

Avoid Metal Out or other products that sequester copper.

Inspect the copper electrode and bars.

Turn off the ionizer before circulation is discontinued.

Winterize the pump, filter, heater, plumbing and electrode assembly as appropriate for your climate.

Install and secure the winter cover.

Periodically inspect the pool and cover throughout the winter.
An Easier Spring Starts With a Proper Fall Closing
One of the benefits of owning an Intec ionized pool is that pool care doesn't have to revolve around continuously adding chlorine and other chemicals.
Winter closing follows the same philosophy.
Rather than loading the pool with chemicals before covering it, concentrate on the fundamentals: remove contaminants, balance the water, establish the proper copper residual, protect the equipment from freezing, and keep debris out of the pool.
When spring arrives, remove the cover, reconnect and inspect the equipment, begin circulation, adjust the pH, and test the copper residual. If additional copper is needed, operate the Intec ionizer until the pool returns to the recommended range.
The result should be a simpler transition from winter back to the clear, fresh water you've come to expect from your ionized pool.
